The ship's anchor has long doubled as decorative shorthand for the sea, and by the mid-twentieth century it had found its way onto everything from bookends to lamp bases — a solid, recognizable silhouette that turned a functional object into a small piece of nautical lamp decor for a coastal home or a sailor's study.
This anchor table lamp, made in France in the 1960s, follows that tradition in polished bronze set into a wood base finished with brass corner accents in the Art Deco style. Note how the anchor's curved flukes are finished to a bright, even shine rather than left with the duller, uneven surface of a quick polish — the kind of careful hand-finishing that gives a bronze anchor lamp its real presence on a desk or shelf. The wood base itself carries the same geometric brass detailing associated with Art Deco furniture hardware, tying lamp and base together as a single considered design.
This piece works well as a 1960s vintage lighting find for a maritime style lighting collection, equally suited to a bedside table lamp or a desk lamp in a study. The cord has been professionally replaced with new wiring, and the bronze anchor has been finely polished to a bright finish. The wood base shows honest wear consistent with its age.
