Large Pair of Louis XVI Style Gilt Bronze Wall SconcesHandled Flame Urns, Fluted Shafts and Sweeping Leaf Arms

At 56 cm tall and 4 kg each, these are sconces for a big wall: a stairwell, a high-ceilinged salon, or either side of a large mirror or fireplace.

Each sconce has a tapering fluted shaft with a tied laurel garland, a ringed collar and a small acorn-like drop at the base. At the top is an urn with curled handles, hung with drapery and crowned with a bouquet finial. Two long arms rise from the base of the shaft like leafy branches, and each ends in an acanthus drip pan, a candle cup and a cream candle sleeve. Large decorative bronzes of this kind were usually sand-cast in several pieces, then bolted together and finished by hand. That is part of why they are so heavy.

The sconces are in very good antique condition, and the old wiring reaches us as found. They have stayed together as a pair through many years and are ready for a new home. Hang them where there is room to let their height show: a hallway, a staircase or a formal dining room.
