Opaline Glass Torch Sconces Pair, Blue Opaline and Brass Wall Torches with Glass Shades — French, 1950s
Opaline is the glass that cannot decide whether it is white or blue — and that indecision is its entire charm. Fired with opacifiers that scatter light inside the glass, true opaline shifts with the room: milk-white by day, a cool moonlit blue where the light passes its edges. French makers of the 1950s prized it precisely for this liveliness, and a torch sconce with an opaline shaft put the material where every passing lamp and window could play across it.
This pair is French, from the 1950s, and an uncommon design: each sconce a full torch mounted off the wall on a reeded brass column and disc base, the torch body a shaft of ribbed opaline glass rods — their blue cast unmistakable against the brass — dropping to a tapered brass tip and ball, and rising through a gadrooned brass collar to a waisted shade of soft white glass. Look at the shaft in the main photograph, where the glass runs from white highlights into blue shadow — that shift is opaline declaring itself, the depth that separates the true material from painted glass or plastic at a glance. Both shades and all shaft rods are intact. The pair takes B22 bayonet bulbs, is fully rewired through our workshop before dispatch, and arrives prepared for wall installation, in working order.
The glass and brass are in great condition throughout, with only the lightest age mellowing, as the photographs show. Whoever hung these torches before you kept every rod and both shades whole. They are ready to flank a mirror, a bed, or light a hallway in style.
The pair is opaline glass and brass, an uncommon torch form, rewired before dispatch. It arrives professionally packed and fully insured — we handle the paperwork and worldwide shipping, with all import duties paid by us, so there is nothing to settle on delivery. Returns are accepted within 30 days.
