Pair of Antique Brass Two-Arm Wall SconcesPierced Ottoman Style Backplates with Scrolling Piano Sconce Arms, 19th Century

These dramatic sconces bring together two worlds. Each backplate is a large, domed shield of pierced brass in the Eastern manner, worked with arches, interlacing scrolls and bands of flowing script, edged with lacy openwork and finished with a hanging lantern-shaped drop below. Mounted on these plates are scrolling 19th-century French piano sconce arms, cast with acanthus and curling foliage, each ending in a ribbed cup, a wide drip pan and an ivory candle sleeve. The combination makes a bold statement, with the gleam of brass, the play of light through the pierced plates and a touch of 19th-century Orientalist romance. At over 13 inches wide and heavy in the hand, they’re showpieces for a living room, a hallway or a dining room.

Condition: Good Antique Condition. The pair was assembled from 19th-century components: Eastern-style pierced backplates combined with later 19th-century French piano sconce arms. There are old restorations to the lower parts and a natural patina consistent with age, as pictured.
