Pair of Gilt Metal Wall Sconces, Palm Leaf Backplate, Pleated Fabric Shades

The palm leaf or acanthus-form backplate is a familiar device in traditional wall lighting, its fanned, fluted shape giving a single-arm sconce enough visual weight to stand on its own without additional arms or ornament. Rising from a narrow, tapering base to a wider spray of leaf-like ribs at the top, the form has an architectural quality that reads well whether shown alone or as part of a matched pair.

This pair is worked in gilt metal, each sconce built around a tall, fluted backplate that flares outward at the top into a fanned, leaf-like crest, with a single scrolled arm extending forward from the base to a socket below. Note how the fluting on the backplate deepens and widens as it rises, giving the piece real dimensional shadow rather than a flat decorative surface, a level of modeling more typical of well-cast pieces than of simpler stamped sconces. Each sconce is fitted with a pleated white fabric shade.

The pair reaches us in very good vintage condition, described by its source as solid, well-made pieces. As lighting pieces, both sconces will be fully rewired through our workshop, delivered working and ready to use, fitted with an E14 socket as supplied. Hung as a pair either side of a mirror or doorway, their tall, narrow profile suits a wall with limited width either side.
