The horse has galloped through the history of art for as long as there has been art, from cave walls to Greek temple friezes to the great equestrian statues of European squares. When private libraries grew in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the horse moved indoors too, standing guard at the ends of bookshelves, where its strength and energy seemed just right for holding a row of books in place.
This pair of bookends brings that tradition to a modern shelf. Each horse emerges from an upright black panel, as if breaking out of the wall, with its mane streaming back and its head turned forward. One foreleg is lifted mid-stride, a pose sculptors have used since antiquity to show a horse in the instant of setting off. The two figures face away from each other, so that, placed at either end of a row of books, they seem to be galloping outward. The polished gold-tone metal of the horses contrasts handsomely with their black L-shaped bases.
The bookends reach us in very good condition, with only light surface marks on the bases. They are ready to go straight to work on a bookshelf, and they will look as good holding a short row of favourite volumes on a desk as a long run on a library shelf. They are a natural choice for a study, an office or a horse lover's home.
