Pair of Louis XVI Style Single-Arm Wall Sconces, Gilt Metal with Acanthus Scroll Arms and Pine Cone Finials

A matching pair of single lights, slim enough for a narrow wall and rich enough in detail to hold their own. Each carries one candle-style light on a curling acanthus arm. They are a classic way to frame a bed, a mirror or a doorway.

Each sconce has a fluted, baluster-shaped backplate topped with a ring and finished below with a leafy collar and a pine cone finial. A single arm, wrapped in acanthus leaves and scrolls, sweeps out from the backplate. It ends in a gadrooned drip pan and a cup holding a cream candle sleeve, with a smaller pine cone hanging beneath the arm's joint. The gilding is shaded darker in the recesses to bring out the depth of the relief. The pine cone was an ancient symbol of hospitality and renewal, which is why it so often finishes classical fittings like these.

The pair is in very good vintage condition. Our workshop fully rewires both and replaces the cracked candle sleeve before they leave. They go on as the identical pair they were made to be. Hung on either side of a bed, a mirror or a doorway, they give a warm, intimate light and a neat classical symmetry.

The pair: two gilt metal single-arm wall sconces with fluted backplates, acanthus scroll arms, pine cone finials and candle sleeves.
