Small Framed English Coaching Print, Four-Horse Coach on a Country Road, Wood Frame with Gilt Slip, 24 × 19 cm
Before the railways, England was crossed by a network of coach roads. Coaches ran on fixed timetables between towns, and every ten or fifteen miles they pulled into a coaching inn, where tired horses were swapped for fresh ones in a matter of minutes. The coaching inns, the busy roads and the coaches themselves became a favourite subject for English sporting artists.
This small framed print shows a coach on one of those roads. A red-bodied coach with red wheels, its roof crowded with passengers, is drawn at a brisk pace by four horses: two dark horses at the wheel and two pale grey leaders in front. The road winds through open country towards distant hills, and figures watch from the roadside. There is a small printed caption below the image. The print sits in a cream mat inside a dark wood frame with a rope-twist moulding and a gilt inner slip, behind glass.
The print is in good condition, as pictured. Its small size makes it easy to place on a bookshelf ledge, a narrow wall or in a group of pictures, and it suits a study, a hallway or a country-style room.
In short, this is a small framed English coaching print showing a four-horse coach on a country road, in a wood frame with a gilt slip. It measures 24 × 19 cm and is exactly as pictured.
