Vintage Small Gold-Tone Wall Mirror with Arched Shaped Frame and Softly Worn Gilding, 21 × 32 cm
Mirrors have often borrowed their shapes from architecture. The rounded heads of windows and doorways, the stepped corners of panelling and the outline of a shield have all found their way onto the frames of looking glasses. A shaped top turns a simple mirror into something that feels like a small window in the wall.
This vintage mirror has just such a shape. The top rises in a gentle arch, and the sides step in and out at the shoulders before curving round at the base. The frame is a broad, rounded moulding finished in gold, with the soft wear of age showing in places. On traditionally gilded frames, the gold is laid over a coloured base, which begins to show through as the surface wears; this frame has a similar warm, gently worn look.
The mirror is in good condition, with a small crack at the top edge of the frame, visible in the photos. Its compact size makes it easy to place, whether in an entrance, a bedroom or a bathroom, or as part of a gallery of mirrors.
In short, this is a vintage small wall mirror with an arched, shaped gold-tone frame and softly worn gilding. It measures 21 × 32 cm and is exactly as pictured.
