Vintage Art Deco Style Reclining Doe Statuette, Copper-Tone Metal, Stylized Deer Figure, 22 cm
Animal sculpture changed in the 1920s and 1930s. Nineteenth-century sculptors had loved fur, feathers and every fine detail, but Art Deco artists went the other way. They smoothed their animals into sleek planes and simple curves, keeping only the lines that gave a creature its character. The result was a quieter, more modern kind of animal sculpture.
This statuette shows that Art Deco approach. A doe lies on the ground with her legs folded beneath her, her long neck lifted and her large ears alert. One foreleg is stretched forward, as if she were about to rise, a pose sculptors used to bring a sense of life to a resting figure. The body is reduced to smooth, flowing shapes, with just enough detail around the eyes and ears to give her expression. The copper-tone finish shines on the raised surfaces and darkens in the hollows.
The statuette is in good condition. It makes a calm, graceful presence on a mantel, a bookshelf or a desk, and a lovely gift for anyone who loves woodland animals.
In short, this is a vintage Art Deco style statuette of a reclining doe in copper-tone metal. It is 22 cm long, weighs 600 g, and is exactly as pictured.
