John Frederick Herring Senior was one of the best-loved English sporting painters of the nineteenth century. His series of fox-hunting scenes followed a hunt from the first gathering to the final run, and it became so popular that it has been reproduced as prints ever since. These pictures still hang in country houses, inns and studies around the world.
This vintage print is captioned “Herring’s Fox-Hunting Scenes” at the top and “Breaking Cover” below. In hunting language, breaking cover is the moment the fox leaves the shelter of the woods and the chase truly begins. Here, riders in scarlet coats and black hats spur their horses forward through a stream and undergrowth, while the hounds race ahead into open country. Autumn trees and a cloudy sky complete the scene, and the colours are rich and lively. The print sits in a wide pale margin inside a dark, mottled frame.
