Brought west in the eighteenth century, it quickly became the star of royal and aristocratic aviaries. Its blaze of colour was so extraordinary that many Europeans who saw it for the first time thought painters had exaggerated it: a golden crest, an amber cape barred with black, and a scarlet breast.

This figure captures that colouring in painted metal. It is cold-painted, meaning the colours were brushed on after casting and never fired, which allows soft, layered shading. The golden crest falls back from the head, and the ruffled cape around the neck is painted in amber and orange with dark bars. The breast is a deep scarlet, the back shades from dark brown to bright yellow, and the long, curving tail is speckled in buff and brown.
