Torch-Style Wall Sconce with Twisted Brass-Tone Column and Clear Seeded Glass ShadeSpare Glass Included, 29.5 cm

Long before electric light, castles and great houses were lit by torches held in iron brackets on the walls. When later designers created wall lights for the home, they often borrowed that dramatic form: an upright handle, like a torch held in the hand, crowned with light. The torch sconce has remained a classic for halls and stairways ever since.

This wall sconce is in that torch style. A scalloped, flower-shaped wall rosette holds a short arm that meets an upright column. The column is twisted in a spiral, like a torch handle, and ends in a small turned finial below. At the top, a brass-tone cup holds a rounded glass shade that flares at the rim. The glass is clear and dotted with tiny trapped bubbles, a type called seeded glass. Bubbles like these were once an accident of early glassmaking, and they are now valued because they sparkle when the light shines through.

The sconce is in good condition, as pictured. It comes with a second, spare glass shade, which can also be used on its own as a small vase. Like every lamp we sell, it is checked in our workshop before it is sent, so it arrives ready to use. It suits a hallway, a staircase or a cosy traditional room.

In short, this is a torch-style wall sconce with a twisted brass-tone column and a clear seeded glass shade, with a spare glass included. It is 29.5 cm tall and exactly as pictured.
