Vintage Art Deco Style Doe StatuetteGilt Metal Fawn Looking Upward on Black Marble Base, 21 cm

In the interwar years, French homes often set out a matching mantel group. A clock stood in the centre, with a gilt animal on a polished black marble plinth on either side. Black marble was the favourite base because it made the warm metal glow. Designers liked graceful, long-legged creatures for these groups, and gazelles, does and fawns turned up again and again, often shown alert, as if they had just heard something in the trees.

This statuette shows a young doe caught in just that moment. She steps forward with one foreleg lifted and bent, her slender neck stretched upward and her head raised, ears back, gazing at something above. The body is simplified into smooth, rounded volumes, typical of Art Deco animal sculpture, with only the eyes, ears and hooves sharply defined. The satin gilt finish catches the light along her back and neck. She stands on a thick rectangular base of polished black marble, which mirrors her slim legs in its surface.

The statuette is in good condition. There is wear to the gilt finish and a small chip at a lower corner of the marble base, as pictured. It weighs over 2 kg, so it feels solid in the hand, and it makes a handsome piece for a mantelpiece, a desk or a bookshelf.
