Around 1900, Art Nouveau took two directions. In Paris and Brussels it was a style of whiplash curves and flowers. In Vienna, Munich and Glasgow, designers drew the same ideas into straighter lines, open frames and geometric outlines. Metalworkers of the time also valued the hand-hammered surface, because it showed how the piece was made and gave each one a texture of its own.

This tall vase follows that geometric strand. Its body tapers in a long cone from a stepped round foot up to a narrow neck and a rolled, flared rim. Most of the surface is hammered all over in small, even facets. Each strike of the hammer leaves a tiny flat plane that catches the light, so the vase shimmers as you move past it. Near the neck, a smooth band carries incised lines and raised roundel motifs. Two angular, open-frame handles, fixed with small rivets, run from the rim down to the body in a symmetrical, almost architectural outline.

The vase is in very good vintage condition. It is a pleasure to look after a piece with this much character and to send it on to its next home. Its height and strong outline suit a mantelpiece, a hall table or a bookcase, either on its own or holding a few tall dried stems.
