In the twentieth century, many designers tried to reduce everyday objects to their simplest form: a block, a cylinder, a plane, with nothing added. A decanter no longer needed cut facets or a shaped neck. A plain rectangle of wood with a flat square lid could say “bottle” just as clearly, and look quietly sculptural on a shelf when not in use.

This pair of liquor decanters, attributed to the twentieth century, is built on exactly that idea. Each is a tall, square column of warm-toned wood, with a short clear neck rising from the top. A flat square stopper, slightly wider than the body, sits on the neck like a cap. Cutting each body from a solid block lets the grain run straight down every face, so the wood itself is the only decoration. Set side by side, the two read almost as a small sculpture.

The pair is in good condition, with minor flaws consistent with age. We are glad to have looked after them and to send them on together. They suit a bar cart, a bookshelf or the corner of a desk, where their straight lines stand out against softer shapes.
