Some of the most memorable sculptures of the last century say everything with a single gesture. Modernist artists found that a figure stretched into one continuous line could hold more feeling than any amount of detail, and they returned again and again to the moment of reaching upward, when a body seems about to leave the ground.
This vintage brass sculpture captures exactly that moment. The figure arches gently backward, her slender body drawn into one long curve from the base to her raised arms, which meet above her head to form a complete ring. The form is reduced to its essentials, with the head tipped back and the body tapering to a narrow point where it meets a round disc base. It is cast in brass, an alloy of copper and zinc that mid-century designers loved for its warm golden colour and the way it takes a polish. Here that warmth runs unbroken along every line of the figure.
The sculpture reaches us in good overall condition, its polished surface bright and even. It has an elegance that rewards being placed where it can be seen in silhouette, and it will be a quiet pleasure in any room it joins.
