Vintage Double Wall Sconce, Attributed 1950s–60s, Gilt Metal with Crossed Arms and Ivory Lacquered Cone Shades, 25 cm
In the 1950s and 1960s, European lighting designers, especially in Italy, treated lamps almost like sculpture. They used slim metal stems, bright finishes and simple cone shapes to make light fittings that looked like flowers or abstract drawings on the wall. Their work brought a new sense of lightness and fun into the home.
This double wall sconce is attributed to the 1950s–60s and is in that spirit. Two slender gilt metal arms cross in front of a leaf-shaped wall plate, which has an ivory panel with fine radiating lines. Each arm rises to an ivory lacquered cone shade with a gilt rim. The cones open upward, so light washes onto the wall above, a technique designers call wall-washing, which fills a room with soft, indirect light. A pull-cord switches the sconce on and off.
The sconce is in good overall condition, with possible small signs of age. Like every lamp we sell, it is checked in our workshop before it is sent, so it arrives ready to use. It is lovely beside a bed, in a hallway or on either side of a mirror.
