A good fire needs looking after, and for centuries every European hearth had its set of tools close at hand. The English call it a companion set, the French a serviteur, the “servant” of the fireplace. Because it stood in full view beside the fire, blacksmiths and founders gave it decorative handles and an ornamental stand, so it looked handsome even when not in use.
This vintage fireplace tool set is complete with its stand and four tools: an ash shovel, tongs, a poker and a brush. The stand rises from a quarter-round tray base, which catches ash and soot, to a twisted column topped with scrolled hooks and a ring handle for carrying. The tools have long iron handles, several with a barley-twist pattern, made by twisting a square bar of iron while hot, which adds strength as well as decoration. Crook-shaped tops let the tools hang neatly from the stand.
The set is in good vintage condition, with a brushed metal finish and marks of use. It is ready to return to work beside a wood fire, or to stand as a decorative piece beside a fireplace.
