Vintage Framed Genre Scene Print, Gentlemen in Period Dress Outside a Country House, Wood Frame with Gilt Fillet, 37 cm
In the nineteenth century, many European painters turned away from grand historical subjects and painted scenes of everyday life instead. This kind of picture is called genre painting, and it was hugely popular because people enjoyed recognising the small pleasures and characters of ordinary days. The best-loved genre scenes were reproduced as prints, so they could hang in homes everywhere.
This framed print shows a lively genre scene. In front of a brick country house, a group of gentlemen in period dress, several in top hats and one in a bright red coat, sit around a small table, deep in conversation. Another man stands nearby with his hands behind his back, looking on. Pots of pink hydrangeas frame the scene, and an open door leads into the house. The print sits within a pale mat, inside a warm-toned wood frame with a slim gilt inner fillet that lifts the colours of the picture.
The print is in good vintage condition and has hooks on the back, so it is ready to hang. It brings a warm, traditional character to a study, a library, a living room or a hallway.
In short, this is a vintage framed print of a genre scene with gentlemen in period dress outside a country house, in a wood frame with a gilt fillet. It measures about 31 × 37 cm and is exactly as pictured.
