Vintage Framed Hunting Picture, Huntsman on Horseback with Hounds in Oval Mount, Burgundy Marbled Mat and Mahogany-Tone Frame, 41.5 cm
Hunting with hounds has been part of European country life for centuries, and it has inspired a long tradition of sporting art. Among the favourite subjects was the huntsman: the rider in charge of the pack, who guides the hounds by voice and horn and leads them out to the hunt. Scenes of the huntsman with his hounds were especially popular in country houses and gentlemen’s studies.
This framed picture shows just such a scene. A huntsman in a dark coat and riding cap sits on a chestnut horse, seen from behind, as he leads a crowd of hounds along a lane. A second rider on a grey horse goes ahead, and trees and a fence frame the scene. The picture is set in an oval opening, within a rich burgundy mat with a marbled pattern, fine gilt lines and gilt ornaments in each corner. A warm mahogany-tone frame completes the presentation.
The picture is in good condition, as pictured. It brings a classic country character to a study, a library, a hallway or a dining room.
In short, this is a vintage framed hunting picture of a huntsman on horseback with his hounds, in an oval mount with a burgundy marbled mat and a mahogany-tone frame. It measures 41.5 × 35 cm and is exactly as pictured.
