Vintage Framed Hunting Scene Picture, Riders in Red Coats with Hounds Jumping a Hedge, English Sporting Art Style, 32 × 26 cm
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the hunt was one of the great subjects of English and French country life. Sporting artists painted riders and hounds racing across fields and leaping hedges, capturing the speed, noise and colour of the chase. Their pictures were so popular that they were copied and reproduced for country houses, inns and gentlemen’s studies across Europe.
This framed picture is in that sporting art style. Riders in scarlet coats and black hats gallop across a winter landscape of bare trees, urging their horses over a hedge and a stream while a pack of hounds surges ahead. The scarlet coats are a hunting tradition, known in English as “hunting pink.” Some riders clear the jump, while one horse lands awkwardly, adding drama and movement to the scene. The picture is set within a dark mat and a wood-tone frame with a gilt inner edge.
The picture is in good condition, as pictured. It brings the energy of the countryside to a study, a library, a hallway or a lodge-style room.
In short, this is a vintage framed hunting scene of riders in red coats with hounds, in the English sporting art style. It measures 32 × 26 cm and is exactly as pictured.
