Vintage Leather Rhinoceros SculptureLarge Safari-Style Animal Figure, 56cm Statement Decor Piece, 1970s
Delivered free · US duties paid · Insured
There's a stillness certain animal sculptures manage to capture that photographs never quite do — not a pose, exactly, but a kind of gravity. This rhinoceros holds its ground the way the real animal does: head low, weight settled forward, every fold of hide accounted for across a body built for presence rather than movement.

There's a stillness certain animal sculptures manage to capture that photographs never quite do — not a pose, exactly, but a kind of gravity. This rhinoceros holds its ground the way the real animal does: head low, weight settled forward, every fold of hide accounted for across a body built for presence rather than movement.
The leather is where the piece does its real work: stretched and shaped over the sculptural form so that every wrinkle and fold in the hide reads as anatomy rather than decoration, then finished to a soft, worn sheen that only comes from handling and time. It's a technique that turns something rigid underneath into something that looks, from across a room, genuinely alive.
Sculptures like this belong to a particular strand of 1970s interior taste — the era's fascination with the exotic and the natural world, rendered not as a hunting trophy but as pure sculptural form, equally at home in a bohemian sitting room or a more classically furnished study. Scaled to command a console or a low table without overwhelming it, it's the kind of object a room gets built around rather than added to.
This sculpture presents in vintage condition, with visible signs of age-related use and wear throughout, including surface rubbing and patina to the leather consistent with a genuine vintage piece — imperfections that add to its authentic character and collectible appeal.
