Vintage Louis XV Style Wall MirrorGold-Tone Resin Frame with Palmette Crest and Scrolled Shell Base, Attributed 1970s–80s, 42 cm

In the 1970s and 1980s, a new material brought the look of carved and gilded frames within reach of ordinary homes. Makers took moulds from hand-carved originals and cast copies in resin, a tough synthetic that holds every detail of the carving. The result had the outline and ornament of a classic French frame, but it was lighter, sturdier and far more affordable, and resin mirrors of this kind found their way into entrance halls and bedrooms across Europe.

This mirror shows that technique well, in the Louis XV style. Its shaped frame curves inward at the shoulders and rounds off at the base, with a stepped, triple-ribbed moulding running all the way around. At the top, a crest of fanned leaves, known as a palmette, rises between two small scrolls. At the bottom, a pair of curling scrolls sits above a small fan-shaped shell. The whole frame is finished in a warm gold tone, with slightly deeper shading in the recesses.

The mirror is in excellent condition. It is light and easy to hang, and its tall, narrow proportions suit a hallway, a bathroom wall or the space beside a front door.
