The silver layer behind a mirror is surprisingly delicate. Over decades, damp air slowly reaches it, and small grey spots and soft clouds begin to bloom across the glass. The French call such a mirror piqué, “pricked”; in English it is “foxed.” Once seen as a flaw, foxing is now so admired by decorators that new mirrors are often treated to imitate it. On an old mirror, though, it develops naturally, and every pattern is different.

This pair of mirror sconces shows both faces of an old mirror. Each has an oval bevelled mirror plate set in a gilt metal frame cast in the Rocaille style, with scrolls, small flowers and leaves, and a shell-like crest at the top. Below the frame, a scrolled stem ends in a leafy drop. Two long arms curve out to each side, edged with leaves and scrolls, and end in leaf-shaped drip pans holding the lights. One mirror is still clear and bright. The other has developed a soft, even foxing that gives it a misty, silvery depth.

The sconces are sturdy and substantial, each weighing 980 g. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. Hung either side of a bed, a fireplace or a doorway, their mirrors will double the light in two very different ways.
