In the twentieth century, sculptors stopped asking how a body looks and began asking how it feels to see one move. The female figure, carved and cast for thousands of years, was pared down to gesture: a stretch, a turn, the line of an arm. What remained was less a portrait of a woman than a portrait of grace itself.
This vintage sculpture captures that idea in a single tall rising form. The figure stands with one arm raised and curved over her head in an open loop, her body twisting gently as it rises from a slender base. The modernist sculptor stretched the figure well beyond natural proportion on purpose, so that the eye reads movement and poise rather than anatomy. The face is suggested only by a softly hollowed plane, leaving the whole expression to the posture. The satin gold-tone surface follows every ridge and turn of the form, and the figure rises from a crisp, square cream stone base.
The sculpture reaches us in good overall condition, its surface carrying gentle tonal variation along the length of the figure. It has the presence of a piece chosen with care, and it deserves a setting where its silhouette can be seen clearly against open space. It stands beautifully at the end of a mantel or console, or on a bookcase shelf with room above it.
