After the swirling curves of the Louis XV period, Louis XVI taste turned to calmer shapes, and the oval became one of its favourites. Portraits of the time were often set in oval frames known as medallions, crowned with a carved bow, so that the sitter seemed to be presented like a cameo. Mirrors soon followed the same pattern, and the bow-topped oval became one of the most recognisable forms of French decoration.
This oval wall mirror follows that Louis XVI pattern. At the top, a ribbon tied in a bow forms the crest, with its loops and trailing ends set against the frame. The frame itself has two decorative bands: a fine row of beads around the inner edge, and an outer band of twisted ribbon and leaves. The gold-tone finish is bright, with only light signs of age.
The mirror is in very good condition. The glass is clear, and the bow crest is complete. It has clearly been treated kindly, and we will pack it with the same care. It looks especially fine above a chest of drawers in a bedroom, or in an entrance hall.
