Vintage Pair of Empire Style Column Table Lamps, Dark Patinated and Gilt Metal on Lion Paw Tripod Bases, with Pleated Shades, 35 cm
In the 1770s, Parisian designers revived an ancient Roman piece of furniture: the tripod stand, raised on three animal legs, that once held incense burners and offerings. They gave it a new name, the athénienne, and it became one of the signature forms of Neoclassical and Empire decoration, appearing as washstands, plant stands and, later, the bases of lamps.
This pair of table lamps stands on just such tripods. Each base is a concave triangular plinth supporting three legs that end in carved lion paws, gathered under a leafy gilt collar. From there rises a slim fluted column with a dark patina, topped by a gilt capital wrapped in acanthus leaves and a turned gilt cup that holds the bulb fitting. The contrast between the dark column and the gilt details is a favourite Empire effect, borrowed from the look of antique bronzes. The lamps come with a pair of pleated pale green fabric shades, trimmed with magenta and gold braid.
The lamps are in good condition. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They make a handsome matched pair for a library, either side of a bed, or at the ends of a sideboard.
In short, this is a vintage pair of Empire style column table lamps in dark patinated and gilt metal on lion paw tripod bases, with pleated fabric shades. Each is 35 cm tall, and they are exactly as pictured.
