Vintage Pair of Twist-Column Candlestick Table Lamps, Patinated Metal with Gadrooned Bases and Candle Sleeves, Sold Without Shades, 38 cm
The twisted column has an ancient pedigree. Early Christian tradition held that spiral columns of this kind came from the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem, and for that reason they became known as Solomonic columns. When Bernini raised four enormous bronze twisted columns over the high altar of St Peter’s in Rome in the 1620s, the form swept through European decoration. It appeared on furniture legs, picture frames and, on a smaller scale, candlesticks.
This pair of table lamps carries that spiral form. Each stands on a round, stepped base with a gadrooned edge, a border of short rounded ribs. A slim column rises from it, twisting in a steady spiral between plain turned collars. At the top, a candlestick cup with a flat drip pan holds a cream candle sleeve, and above it sits the bulb holder, which has its own built-in switch. The metal has a deep, dark patina that brings out the light and shadow of the spiral.
The lamps are in very good condition. Like every lamp we sell, they are checked in our workshop before they are sent, so they arrive ready to use. They are tall enough to take a proper reading shade, which makes them a natural pair for two nightstands, a sideboard or a library table.
In short, this is a vintage pair of twist-column candlestick table lamps in patinated metal, with gadrooned bases and candle sleeves. Each is 38 cm tall, and they are sold without shades and exactly as pictured.
