The bookend is one of the quietest working objects in any home, and one of the most personal. Through the last century it became a small canvas for craftsmen, who turned, carved and decorated these simple supports so that the ends of a bookshelf could say something about the reader who owned it. Wood was always a favourite, warm to the touch and endlessly varied in its grain.
This pair shows that warmth in full. Each bookend is a rounded dome of turned wood set against an upright arched panel, banded with brass-tone metal strapping fixed with round studs, a detail that recalls the iron-bound travel trunks and sea chests of earlier centuries. The domes were shaped on a lathe, where the wood spins against a cutting tool so the form comes out perfectly round and the grain wraps around it in rings. The wood itself is strongly figured, shading from honey to deep brown with dramatic, swirling markings.
The bookends reach us in good vintage condition, with a gentle patina of age. The wood shows light wear, small marks and natural variations in tone, and the metal bands carry their own patina with some light oxidation. They are ready to go straight to work, holding a row of books on a library shelf, a desk or a mantel. They suit a study with a rustic or collector's character especially well.
