Vintage Pâte de Verre Style VaseHand-Painted Landscape Design in Orange and Green, 1930s-40s
Delivered free · US duties paid · Insured
There is a soft, matte quality to this vase that pulls the eye differently than clear glass ever could — a warm coral-orange ground painted over with a landscape scene, trees and reeds rendered in layered greens that seem to hover just beneath the surface, as though a summer evening had been caught mid-glow inside the glass itself. Vases finished this way belong to a moment in early twentieth-century decorative art when glassmakers began treating the vessel as a canvas, layering color and shadow

Vases finished this way belong to a moment in early twentieth-century decorative art when glassmakers began treating the vessel as a canvas, layering color and shadow to suggest depth and atmosphere rather than simple pattern. It evokes the atmosphere of a sunroom or a dressing table in the 1930s, where a single painted vase like this one might have held a few cut stems and quietly set the tone for the whole room. Brought into a home today, it still carries that same soft glow, the kind of object that looks equally at home on a windowsill catching afternoon light or grouped among other colored glass on an open shelf.
The vase has a tall, waisted silhouette with a narrowing neck and a gently flared foot, finished in a matte orange ground decorated with a hand-painted landscape scene of trees, foliage, and a reed-lined bank in shades of green. The surface has a soft, frosted texture typical of pâte de verre-style glass, and the painted decoration wraps continuously around the body, drawing the eye upward from base to shoulder.
This is offered as a single vase.
