Among the glasshouses of Bohemia, one enduring theme has been the imitation of nature in glass — trunks, bark, ice, water — worked not as decoration applied to a form but as the form itself. This rouleau vase belongs to that tradition: a cylinder given the skin of a tree trunk, rendered entirely in a graduated turquoise that shifts from deep sea-blue at the foot to a pale, almost misted blue-white at the rim.
The vase is worked in the style of Czech glassmaker Václav Hanuš, whose glasshouses were known for exactly this kind of sculptural, naturalistic surface treatment. Look closely at the texture and you can see how it's built: the vertical striations run the full height like the fissures of true bark, interrupted by small raised nodules where the glass was worked while still hot. The scalloped rim closes the piece off cleanly, echoing the natural, uneven top of a cut branch.
