Before it was a lamp, this was a flambeau, a tall candlestick made to carry a flame from room to room. Now it has been fitted for electricity and gives a soft light under a pale shade.

The lamp stands on a three-sided base with curved sides, decorated with a border of leaves. It rests on three small lion's paw feet. Above the base, curling leaves wrap a knop, and a fluted stem rises between two collars of palm-like leaves to the bulb fitting. It comes with a newer cone-shaped shade with a raw-silk look, edged in a cream band. The French word "flambeau" comes from the Latin "flamma", meaning flame. It first meant a torch, and only later came to mean the candlesticks that held candles on tables and mantelpieces.

The lamp is in very good antique condition, and the shade is clean. It has been converted, wired with a new cotton cord and switch, and is ready for a new desk or side table. Set it on a bedside table, a desk or a hall console.
