There is a particular liveliness to sporting prints of this kind — a rider in red frozen mid-canter beside a riderless second horse, dust and motion suggested in a few economical lines. Prints like this one, paired with their French titles below the English caption, were made for an international audience of horse and hunting enthusiasts, the kind of image that hung in a study, a stable office, or a hallway lined with similar equestrian scenes. It carries the character of that sporting print

Prints like this one, paired with their French titles below the English caption, were made for an international audience of horse and hunting enthusiasts, the kind of image that hung in a study, a stable office, or a hallway lined with similar equestrian scenes. It carries the character of that sporting print tradition, framed here to be looked at as closely as the fine engraved detail deserves.
The print is a hand-colored engraving titled "A Hunter and a Pony" in English and "Un Cheval de Chasse et un petit Cheval" in French, after Carle Vernet, engraved by Levachez. It depicts a mounted rider in a red coat on a grey horse, leading a second horse at a gallop across an open landscape. The print is presented within a wide green and cream mount with fine ruled borders, set in a dark wood frame with a gilt edge.
