Mirror Wall Sconces Pair, Art Deco Style Mirrored Sconces with Glass Arms — French, 1940s
The mirrored sconce is 1940s France solving light shortage with elegance: put the wall light on a mirror, and one bulb becomes two. The idea descends from the girandoles of the eighteenth century, but the 1940s ateliers — working in the taste made famous by Maison Baguès — stripped it to essentials: a bevelled mirror plate, a curl of glass for the arm, and the reflection doing half the work of the fixture.
This pair is French, from the 1940s, in the Art Deco taste: each sconce a shield-form mirror plate with canted top corners and bevelled edges, carrying a scrolled arm of clear glass finished with a pressed glass flower, rising through a brass ring platform to the socket cup — with the mirror doubling arm, flower, and flame behind. Watch the sconce as you cross the room — the reflected arm moves against the real one, so the fixture changes composition with every step, the living effect the mirror plate exists to create. Both mirror plates and both glass arms are intact, in great vintage condition. The pair takes B22 bayonet bulbs, is fully rewired through our workshop before dispatch, and arrives prepared for wall installation, in working order.
The mirrors carry their silvering well with only minor age softening at the edges, and the brass mounts are evenly mellowed, as the photographs show. Whoever hung this pair before you kept both glass arms unbroken through eighty years — no small custodianship. They are made for flanking a mirror, a bed, or bringing light to a dressing room.
The pair is mirror, glass, and brass, rewired before dispatch. It arrives professionally packed and fully insured — we handle the paperwork and worldwide shipping, with all import duties paid by us, so there is nothing to settle on delivery. Returns are accepted within 30 days.
