Pair of Vintage Gold-Tone Reed Wall Sconces, Two Arms Each, Clear Plastic Accents, Bare Bayonet Sockets, 50 cm

A bundle of slender golden stems, tied at the middle and fanning out at both ends: this pair turns a simple harvest image into a light for the wall.

Each sconce is a sheaf of thin gilt stems bound together with a ribbed band. Two stems curve up to hold a small dish and a bulb holder each. A third, taller stem ends in a long clear pointed drop, and a fourth curves down to hold a matching drop. The loose ends of the stems flare out below. The tied sheaf was an old French symbol of plenty and a good harvest, carved and cast on furniture for centuries. In the 1960s and 1970s, designers took it up again in light, airy metal for walls and ceilings.

The sconces are in good vintage condition, with rubbing to the gilt in places. The old wiring reaches us as found. They have been kept together as a pair and are ready for a new home. They suit a bedroom, a dressing room or either side of a mirror.
