Vintage Empire Style Eagle Table Lamp, Converted Candlestick with Rosette Plinth, Brass-Tone Metal

An eagle with spread wings perches on a stepped square plinth. A slender curved stem rises behind it to carry the light.

The lamp is in brass-tone metal. A square stepped plinth, edged with leaf and bead mouldings and set with a cast rosette on each side, supports an eagle with outspread wings. A curved brass stem rises from behind the eagle to the socket. It started life as a candlestick, and the candle holder was later replaced with this stem to turn it into a lamp. The round flower on the plinth is a rosette, one of the oldest ornaments in architecture. It was used in ancient Assyria and Greece, and Empire designers loved it for furniture mounts and bronzes.

The lamp is in good vintage condition. It has been converted to electricity with a later stem, and it will be fully rewired in our workshop before dispatch. It's been looked after over the years, and it's ready for a new desk. It suits a writing desk, a library table or a bedside table.
