Vintage French Gilt Metal Sliding Desk Lamp with Frosted Glass Tulip Shade and Ruffled Cranberry-Tone Rim

Slide the arm up for reading or down for writing: this desk lamp moves along its stem to put the light right where your hands are.

The lamp stands on a round base decorated with swirling ribs and a leafy border. A tall stem rises from a leaf-cast collar and ends in an ornate pierced loop. A sliding collar on the stem holds a leafy scrolled arm with a small cone-shaped knob that locks it in place. At the end of the arm hangs a frosted glass tulip shade, moulded with garlands, with a ruffled rim shading to cranberry and violet. Lamps with a sliding arm like this were often made for writing desks and pianos, where the light needed to drop close to a page of letters or sheet music.

The lamp is in good vintage condition. The thread on the small locking knob is worn, so the arm may not hold its position firmly. The old wiring reaches us as found. It has had years of use and is ready for a new desk. Set it on a writing desk, a piano or a bedside table.

Desk lamp in brief: a gilt metal sliding desk lamp with a leafy arm and a frosted glass tulip shade with a ruffled cranberry-tone rim, rewired and ready to use.
