Vintage Pair of Brass-Tone French Fiacre Carriage Wall Lanterns with Etched Wheat Glass Panels
In French, a horse-drawn cab for hire is a "fiacre", and these lanterns are styled after the ones that hung on its sides as it rattled through the streets at night.
Each lantern has a many-sided body with glass panels, each etched with a sprig of wheat or leaves. On top is a domed cap pierced with small cross-shaped vents and a turned finial, and below is a long tapering tube. A short side bracket fixes each lantern to the wall. The word "fiacre" comes from the Hôtel Saint-Fiacre in 1600s Paris, where the first cabs for hire waited for passengers outside. The name stuck to the carriages, and later to their lanterns.
The lanterns are in good vintage condition. One glass panel is broken and another is chipped at a corner, and the old wiring reaches us as found. They have stayed together as a pair and are ready to light an entrance again. Mount them either side of a front door, in a covered porch or along a hallway.
Fiacre pair: two brass-tone carriage-style lanterns with etched wheat glass panels and pierced caps, rewired and sold as a pair.
