Vintage Pair of Chrome-Tone Swan-Neck Wall Sconces with Frosted Hexagonal Glass Shades

Simple, practical and quietly elegant, lights like these were hung over washbasins, in hallways and above doorways across France for decades.

Each sconce has a round chrome-toned wall plate and a long arm that curves up and over like a question mark. A frosted glass shade hangs from the end. The shade is six-sided and flares from a narrow neck to a wider base, so the light falls softly downward. It sits in a small metal holder, called a fitter or gallery, with thumbscrews that grip the neck of the glass. That lets the shade come off for cleaning or bulb changes without any tools.

The sconces are in good vintage condition. One shade has a small chip at the neck where it meets the holder, and the old wiring reaches us as found. They have stayed together as a pair and are ready for a new wall. Hang them over a bathroom mirror, in a hallway or either side of a kitchen window.
