Vintage Pair of French Art Deco Copper-Tone Scroll Wall Sconces with White Ribbed Shades

A simple curl of copper and a wavy white shade: this pair shows how French designers of the 1930s and 1940s did away with ornament and let one clean line do the work.

Each sconce has a flat, copper-toned bracket that loops into a scroll at the base and holds a curved white shade. The shade is finely ribbed, with a soft wave along its top and bottom edges, and is fixed with two small studs. When the light is on, the ribs spread the glow evenly across the wall. Shades like these were often made from celluloid, one of the first plastics, invented in the 1860s and 1870s. It could be pressed into thin, light-diffusing sheets long before modern acrylics existed.

The sconces are in good vintage condition, with light signs of wear. They have stayed together as a pair since the 1930s or 1940s and are ready for another wall. They suit a hallway, a bathroom or either side of a bed.

Copper-and-white pair: two French copper-toned scroll sconces with white ribbed shades, rewired and sold as a pair.
