Vintage Pair of Large Louis XVI Style Gilt Metal Two-Arm Wall Sconces with Draped Urn and Mask

A small animal mask looks out from the middle of each of these sconces, giving a formal Louis XVI design a touch of character.

Each sconce has a tapering fluted shaft wrapped in acanthus leaves at the top, with a mask hung with drapery at its centre and a turned drop at the base. Above the shaft sits a draped urn with tassels and a pine-cone finial, on a collar decorated with a band of rolling scrolls like breaking waves. Two leaf-cast arms bend out to the sides, and each ends in a fluted cup with a beaded drip pan and a cream candle sleeve. That wave-like border is called a Vitruvian scroll, named after Vitruvius, the Roman architect whose writings inspired classical design for centuries.

The sconces are in very good vintage condition, with light tarnish on the arms. The old wiring reaches us as found. They have been kept together as a pair and are ready for a new wall. Hang them either side of a fireplace, a tall mirror or a doorway.
