Vintage Pair of Louis XV Style Gilt Metal Two-Arm Wall Sconces with Acanthus Crest

A tall plume of leaves rises from the top of each of these sconces, almost like a crest on a helmet. Hung as a pair, they frame a mirror, a bed or a fireplace with a warm, gilded glow.

Each sconce has a central stem with a ribbed cup, topped by a crest of curling acanthus leaves. Two leafy scrolled arms curve out from the stem, and each ends in a round drip pan with a beaded edge and a candle sleeve. Below, the stem ends in a shield-shaped drop with a criss-cross pattern. That pattern is called a lattice or trellis. French designers of the 1700s borrowed it from garden trellises and used it to fill small panels on furniture, metalwork and textiles.

The sconces are in very good vintage condition, and the old wiring reaches us as found. They have been kept together as a pair and are ready for a new room. They suit a bedroom, a hallway or either side of a mantel mirror.
