Vintage Set of Three Louis XVI Style Gilt Metal Wall Sconces with Curtain Tie-Back and Tassel Design

Three sconces with five lights between them, all cast in the shape of a curtain tie-back, looped, knotted and finished with hanging tassels.

Each back plate is a long looped cord, crossed and tied at the middle and ending below in two tassels. The two larger sconces each have two arms wrapped in small leaves and berries, rising to cups shaped like opening tulips. The third sconce has a single light that hangs downward under a leafy collar. In French, this design is called "embrasse", the word for the corded tie-back that holds a heavy curtain open. Louis XVI style metalwork often borrowed from the soft furnishings of a room, so the lights matched the curtains they hung beside.

The set is in very good vintage condition, with its gilding well kept, and the old wiring reaches us as found. The three have been kept together and are ready to light a room again. Hang the two matching sconces either side of a fireplace or a bed, and the single one beside a doorway or a mirror.
