Vintage Silver-Tone Footed Vase with Swirled Gadroons and Rolled Rim

Swirling ribs twist around the lower half of this small vase, so it seems to turn even when it's standing still. Above them, a smooth band flares out to a rolled rim.

The vase is silver-tone metal, shaped like an open tulip on a round stepped foot. The lower half is worked with swirled gadroons, rounded ribs set at an angle, ending in a scalloped line. The upper half is plain and widens to a rolled rim. When gadroons are twisted like this, instead of running straight up and down, the shape gains a sense of movement. That effect was much loved in 18th-century French silver and copied ever since.

The vase is in good vintage condition, with oxidation spots and scratches overall. It's had a long, useful life, and it's ready for its next one. Fill it with a small bunch of flowers, use it as a cachepot for a little plant, or keep brushes or pens in it on a desk.
