Vintage Single Louis XVI Style Brass-Tone Two-Arm Wall Sconce with Ribbon Bow and Ceramic Medallion after Fragonard
At the centre of this sconce, a small painted-style scene shows a young couple in 18th-century dress meeting in a garden, framed in gilt like a miniature portrait.
The sconce hangs from a ribbon bow with long tails. Below it, an oval beaded frame holds a white ceramic medallion printed with the courting couple, signed "Fragonard" in the picture. A tapering fluted shaft runs down to a leafy drop, and two reeded arms curve out and up, each ending in an eight-sided drip pan. Scenes like this were usually made by transfer printing. The picture was printed onto special paper, laid on the glazed ceramic and fired, so a famous painter's design could be reproduced on thousands of small plaques.
The sconce is in very good vintage condition, with a darkened patina, and the old wiring reaches us as found. It has kept its medallion intact and is ready for a new wall. Hang it beside a dressing table, a mirror or a bed.
