Vintage Two-Tone Brass-Tone Flying Duck Sculpture Among Cattails
A bright brass-tone duck bursts upward out of a clump of dark reeds, wings spread wide and neck stretched forward. It catches the moment of take-off from the edge of a pond.
The duck is polished to a warm gold tone and shaped in smooth, simplified planes, with broad scalloped wings raised high behind it and its feet just leaving the ground. Behind it rises a cluster of long, dark-patinated leaves and three tall cattails with textured seed heads. The whole group stands on a low base shaped like a lily pad. The contrast between the shiny bird and the darker reeds makes the duck stand out as if lit by the sun. The brown spikes are cattails, or bulrushes. Each spike packs in many thousands of tiny seeds, which drift away on fluffy down in autumn.
The sculpture is in very good vintage condition, with a bright finish on the duck, light tarnish streaks, and an even dark patina on the reeds and base. It's ready to stand on a shelf, a mantel or a desk for many years. It suits a study, a cabin-style room or a lake house.
Duck-in-the-reeds: a vintage two-tone brass-tone sculpture of a duck taking flight from a cluster of dark cattails, on a lily-pad base.
