Wooden Footed BowlHand Carved Pedestal Bowl, Berber Style — North African, Dark Patina
Delivered free · US duties paid · Insured
In the Berber households of North Africa, the footed bowl was a working object: carved from a single block of wood, raised on its pedestal so it could sit steady on an uneven floor and be shared from at the level of seated diners. Nothing about it was decorative in intention — the form follows the knife, the tree, and the meal — which is exactly why these bowls sit so naturally in modern interiors, where their shapes read as sculpture.

Hand-carved solid wood, single piece; deep red-brown patina
Condition: good condition for a utilitarian object; surface wear and small age checks consistent with hand carving and long use
This bowl is hand-carved in the Berber manner from a single piece of wood, a wide shallow basin on a flared, gently squared pedestal foot. The rim runs slightly out of round and the walls vary in thickness — hold it against the light of the photograph and follow the rim's soft irregular line, the trace of an object cut freehand from the log rather than turned on a lathe, where no two diameters would ever measure the same. The surface has deepened to a warm red-brown in the basin, darkening toward near-black on the foot, a colour built by years of handling and use rather than applied in one coat.
The wood is sound, with surface wear, small age checks, and irregularities native to a hand-carved utilitarian object; the photographs show it as it is. Whoever shared their meals from this bowl before you kept it in daily use. It sits naturally at the centre of a dining table, on a kitchen island, or on a console as a catchall.
The bowl is a single piece of solid carved wood, roughly a third of a metre across. It arrives professionally packed and fully insured — worldwide shipping and US import duties are included. For other destinations, local import taxes and duties may apply and are payable by the recipient. Returns are accepted within 30 days.
